The Applied Intelligence Lab

The Applied Intelligence Lab exists to study intelligence in its many forms and put that understanding to work. Human intelligence: how emotional and cultural awareness shape people, teams, and organizations. Artificial intelligence: how modern AI systems can be designed, built, and deployed responsibly. Institutional intelligence: how both of those bodies of knowledge can improve how a university actually runs. The lab treats research and practice as one continuous effort, not two separate paths.

Every project here starts as a real problem, not a proof of concept. Research questions come from lived experience inside higher education: how students adapt across cultures, how emotional intelligence affects performance under pressure, how a business and technology school can operate more intelligently. From there, the work moves in one of two directions: published, peer-reviewed research, or a working AI system built and deployed to solve the actual problem. Students are invited into both.

The Applied Intelligence Lab is independently owned and operated by Dr. Rohan Thompson. It is not an official unit or program of Huston-Tillotson University, though its work is deeply informed by his role as Dean of the School of Business and Technology there. The lab is a living project: its focus areas, publications, and systems will continue to grow and change as the work does.

Meet the Director

Dr. Rohan Thompson leads three accredited programs in business, computer science, and mechanical engineering at Huston-Tillotson University, Austin's oldest institution of higher education and a historically Black university. In parallel, he designs and builds production AI platforms, nine so far, all of them personally. His research and building sit where academic leadership and applied artificial intelligence meet.
